Cancer

Cancer poem on a beautiful layout

Cancer poem on a beautiful layout

We headed out, out we headed,
thru an open window we heard the whine of tires on the pavement,
that sound of hot black tar asphalt beneath us.

Me,
driving two sisters,
my Aunt and my Mom,
searching for their innocence,
retracing their youth.

On back roads now,
four wheels on gravel roads,
from Landis, Handel, on to Leipzig,
in that province of Saskatchewan.
Dust flying, as we headed west,
it was the summer of '05.

I watched them revisit their youth once again.

Two sisters now in their seventies,
no signs of wrinkles, no signs of grey hair.
but for this day, back in their teens,
laughing and giggling,
like little schoolgirls would.

No signs of my aunt with her loss of a daughter,
twenty years earlier to a car accident.
No signs of a life to an abusive, alcoholic husband.
No signs of wiping away tears.
No signs. Just happiness.

For today they saw with brand new eyes.

Like when we went to the second generation
Chinese restaurant where
we stopped at to eat.

And there we ate hope.

I would witness a special kind of freedom maybe
only sisters could enjoy.
That ethereal freedom to share one's innermost thoughts,
to be there no matter what, whatever was going on.
I heard enchanting stories from their childhoods.

What a privilege for me!

My aunt wore a smile on her face that day,
In spite of all the events of her life.
She always had a smile for another,
No signs of her trouble, for it was no trouble to help another.

There are some who drift in and out thru the plains of doubt.
She met despair and defeat with grace.
With the grace of God.

She would die the following spring.
To the same disease that took her first child,
forty years earlier.

Writer's reply to Anonymous
by: Miles Patrick Yohnke

I'm glad this poem, that I could be of help. I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my father at the age of five. Dad died in a tragic accident, he was just 39. One of the things I've learned from it. Today is the day. Live it like it is your last. Tomorrow isn't promised to anyone. My mother is strong. She just 36 when he died. She never dated after. All her energy was to her three sons. Grateful we are! And today we will be our best. Once again thank-you for replying. Taking time out of your life for another.

Sincerely,

Miles Patrick Yohnke

Choosing your memories
by: Anonymous

Hi Miles

Thank you for sharing that experience. I lost my mom to cancer 11 years ago. I always feel that I could have done more to make her life better or more comfortable. Your poem helped me remember the fun times and happy times we did share along that long and heart breaking road. Thank you for helping me change the focus of my memories.

A sister can be a great gift
by: Fion

Hi Miles, thanks so much for sharing your poem about your Aunt, the relationship she shared with your Mom, and your beautiful memories of her. To have a sister who's there, who has shared history and memories, can be such a joy and comfort in one's life. I recall days of giggling and laughing with my sisters, and I'm so blessed that we still do. Your Aunt had great strength, meeting despair and defeat with grace, not many could do that. And to be able to smile for another in spite of her troubles, again highlight her inner strength. Thanks for sharing!
